Protestant evangelicals from Brazil and the US have a long history of strong relations. The growth of evangelical churches in Brazil began with ministries from the United States. Today, Capitol Ministries is a powerful player in that relationship. The group was formed in Washington, and welcomed by former President Donald Trump. Leaders from the group were invited to the White House and Capitol Hill for weekly Bible study sessions with government officials. Since 2017, the conservative evangelical group has made connections across Latin America, and says it aims to eventually reach 200 countries around the world. In Brazil, the group has strong ties to President Jair Bolsonaro’s government. Michael Fox has the story of what it’s trying to accomplish there.
