Activists in anti-establishment Copenhagen commune Christiana take on drug gangs

In Denmark’s capital of Copenhagen, the commune self-styled as “Freetown Christiania” has served as a refuge for the country’s counterculture for five decades. And while drugs like cannabis have been easily accessible there, the hippie drug dealers have gradually been replaced by increasingly violent gang members. In response, activists in the commune have been attempting to disrupt the drug trade. Kim Møller, associate professor of criminology at Malmö University in Sweden, told The World’s Carolyn Beeler that the anti-establishment residents are also increasingly turning to the establishment for help — including police.
