The writer who published a satirical magazine while hiding in a Dutch home during WWII

The World

During World War II, a German Jew hiding out in The Netherlands created an unusual form of resistance to the Nazis: a satirical magazine filled with hand-written poetry and covered in handmade collages. From 1943 to 1945, Curt Bloch published the magazine titled,“Het Onderwater Cabaret” from a crawl space in a Dutch home. His work will be featured next year in an exhibit at the Jewish Museum Berlin. The World’s Carol Hills spoke to one of the curators of the exhibit, Aubrey Pomerance. He’s the head of archives at the museum and joins us from the German capital.
