Protests across India against a shift in the military’s recruitment policy have left trains ablaze and at least one person dead. The policy, known as Agnipath or “the path of fire,” going into effect this month, would begin new military contracts on a four-year basis, with only a quarter of recruits expected to continue after that term. While the government says this is a modernizing effort, protesters say the program is cutting young men out of opportunities for career advancement in the military.
