The unidentified Georgia teacher who used slavery-themed math questions has resigned, according to news reports and local school officials.

Gwinnet County Schools spokeswoman, Sloan Roach said Wednesday that the teacher has resigned, the Atlantic Journal-Constitution reported. "The principal will move forward immediately to fill the vacancy created by this resignation," Roach said in a statement. "As this is a personnel matter, the district will not elaborate further."

The teacher who worked at Beaver Ridge Elementary in suburban Lawrenceville used questions like "If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?" to teach math in four classrooms.

Another question asked “Each tree had 56 oranges. If 8 slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?”

The controversial incident can be perplexing considering 88 percent of the school’s student population is black or Hispanic, and 50 percent of staff are non-white, according to the Journal-Constitution.

The teacher’s math lessons caught public furor and led to a number of protests at the school from parents and civil rights groups.
