  • Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut has made gun control a priority since the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting killed 20 children in 2012. This week, he has come out in support of Senator Dianne Feinstein’s ban on bump fire stocks. Senator Murphy joins The Takeaway today to talk about how Congress can make progress on gun legislation in the wake of Sunday’s attack.

  • The 2017 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded earlier today to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). Nancy Soderberg, former deputy national security adviser and a former ambassador to the United Nations, joins The Takeaway to explain why ICAN unexpectedly won the prize. 
  • Every Friday, Rafer Guzman, film critic for Newsdayand The Takeaway, drops by to review the new releases hitting the box office. This week, Rafer reviews the eagerly anticipated sci-fi sequel “Blade Runner 2049,” and the drama “The Mountain Between Us,” starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba.

  • The movie “Blade Runner” conjures up the possibilities for artificial intelligence outside of the science fiction realm. From Watson to self-driving cars, is A.I. approaching a point in history where it can surpass human intelligence?  Kate Darling, a researcher at the MIT Media Lab and self-proclaimed “Mistress of Machines,” weighs in on the ethical implications of artificial intelligence.
  • Lisa Loeb, who shot to fame in 1995 with her hit “Stay,” is releasing a new album of covers this week, called “Lullaby Girl.” She sits down with The Takeaway to talk about her legacy as a pop star and how she continues to redefine herself.
