A Massacre on The Las Vegas Strip

The Takeaway

Coming up on today’s show:

  • On Sunday in Las Vegas, a gunman carried out the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, leaving more than 50 people dead and over 200 injured. Casey Morell, a coordinating producer for Nevada Public Radio’s public affairs program “State of Nevada,” explains what we know so far about the shooting. Danita Cohen, chief experience officer at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas, discusses the medical response in her city.
  • Some 12 days after Hurricane Maria, residents in Puerto Rico are still dealing with widespread power outages, and long lines for food, water, and gasoline. President Donald Trump and other senior administration officials are scheduled to visit the island on Tuesday, just days after the president came under widespread scrutiny for his tweets criticizing the island and its leaders. David Begnaud, a correspondent for CBS News who has been reporting on the response efforts across the island, brings us the latest.
  • Jeremy Konyndyk, former head of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance under the Obama Administration currently a senior policy fellow at the Center for Global Development, analyzes the Trump Administration’s response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, and offers his suggestions for what should be done going forward.
  • Hundreds were injured during Catalonia’s independence referendum over the weekend, as the national police force descended on polling stations in riot gear.
  • On Monday, a new term begins for the Supreme Court. The Takeaway examines the big cases to watch for with Amy Howe, co-founder of SCOTUSblog. Raphael Minder, Spain correspondent for our partners at The New York Times and author of the book “The Struggle for Catalonia,” reflects on the violence during the referendum and what to expect in the wake of the vote.
  • The latest novel from Igiaba Scego, a second generation Somali-Italian journalist, is “Adua,” which connects her two worlds. The story, which centers on colonialism and the modern refugee crisis, traverses across 1930s Italy, 1970s Somalia, and present day Italy. She discusses her new work today on The Takeaway.

This episode is hosted by Todd Zwillich.
