“The mayor goes down with his ship.”

The Takeaway

Coming up on today’s show:

  • As Hurricane Irma approaches the Sunshine State, evacuations are underway in the Florida Keys. The low lying islands, which are about six feet above sea level, only have one road in and out, and a storm surge could be catastrophic if people do not leave. Nancy Klingener, WLRN Florida Keys reporter, weighs in.
  • Roads and properties in Miami Beach, Florida could be underwater with just three feet of sea level rise, which may happen by 2050. But emergency managers say fool-proof plans are fiction, and Hurricane Irma’s impact can upend the playbook. Philip Stoddard, mayor of South Miami, explains.
  • Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson is co-leading a lawsuit with 15 other attorneys general challenging President Donald Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, alleging that the president’s action is unconstitutional and illegal. Attorney General Ferguson joins The Takeaway to discuss the suit.
  • Melissa Locker, culture reporter for TIME, The Guardian, and The Takeaway, delivers a preview of the fall television lineup, including “The Deuce” with James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal; “Law & Order: The Menendez Murders” with Edie Falco; “Dynasty” on the CW, and Mindhunter on Netflix.
  • Every Friday, Rafer Guzman, film critic for Newsday and The Takeaway, drops by to review the new films hitting the box office. This week he reviews the re-make of the Stephen King horror film “IT,” and a romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, “Home Again.”
  • Credit reporting agency Equifax announced Thursday that the personal information of 143 million U.S. consumers was exposed through a cybersecurity breach. Kim Zetter, a journalist who covers cybersecurity for WIRED, The Washington Post, and The Intercept, has the details on the attack.
  • On Wednesday, New York City announced that all public schools will offer free lunch to its 1.1 million students. Could this program serve as a model for schools around the country? New York City Council Member Ben Kallos, who represents New Yorkers in the Upper West Side and Roosevelt Island, joins The Takeaway to talk about the importance of ensuring that every student receives lunch at school.

This episode is hosted by Todd Zwillich.
