Coming up on today’s show:

  • A version of President Trump’s travel ban takes effect today, after the Supreme Court upheld portions of the executive order on Monday. Critics have raised questions, however, about the wording and implementation of the ruling. Here to explain is Leon Fresco. He’s the former deputy assistant attorney general at the Justice department, where he was head of the Office of Immigration Litigation during the Obama Administration.
  • Cardinal George Pell, a senior adviser to Pope Francis, is facing charges of sexual assault in his home country of Australia. For a look at what’s next for Cardinal Pell, The Takeaway turns to Philip Mercer, a BBC reporter in Sydney.
  • Ten years ago today, Apple unveiled the iPhone. In the decade since, the smartphone has changed the way millions of people live and work. On the 10th anniversary, Takeaway listeners from around the United States explain what they love and hate about having smartphone technology.
  • This Saturday marks 20 years since Hong Kong left the United Kingdom to come under Chinese rule. On Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Hong Kong for the first time as president, amidst a growing tide of anti-mainland sentiment. Isaac Stone Fish, senior fellow at the Asia Society’s Center on U.S.-China Relations, discusses what we should expect from Xi’s visit.
  • On Thursday, President Trump will begin the first day of a two day summit with newly-elected South Korean President Moon Jae-in. While North Korea will be a subject of discussion, trade may be the biggest issue. Christopher Hill, U.S. ambassador to South Korea from 2004-2005, and former ambassador to Iraq from 2009-2010, reflects on the issues facing the two nations.
  • The United States has some of the most draconian laws around the world when it comes to sentencing juvenile offenders. While the Supreme Court has slowly worked to reverse these policies, at the state level, the progress on re-sentencing has been slow and varied. Danielle Wolffe, reporter with The Nation, explains.

This episode is hosted by Todd Zwillich.
