I don’t remember now whether I ever read The Wind in the Willows when I was a kid, but I grew up feeling as if I had. I knew it was about animals who lived along a riverbank and loved messing about in boats. My scientist father, a Yorkshireman who moved to the United States at the age of 33, referred to it often.
