Car bomb explodes in Mogadishu

A car bomb exploded Friday afternoon in a police compound in Mogadishu, Somalia, the Associated Press said. 

Reuters reported that the police arrested a man suspected of carrying bombs and his car exploded while outside the police station, injuring two officers. "It went off prematurely as we were waiting for bomb experts to come and disarm the car," an officer told Reuters. The AP said police suspect it was detonated by a remote control.

AlertNet reported that refugees are fleeing increasing violence in the country's Afgooye corridor, which is outside Mogadishu. The area, which is home to a large population of internally displaced people who fled violence in other parts of Somalia, exploded in violence on Tuesday.

Oxfam told AlertNet that just after famine conditions eased slightly, violence returned. The aid agency reported: "We passed thousands of people fleeing the fighting on foot. We have never seen such a massive influx of people on the move at one time."
