7.3 quake strikes near Sumatra

An earthquake struck off the western coast of the northern Indonesian island of Sumatra, the US Geological Survey reported today.

It hit just after midnight Wednesday off at a depth of 18.1 miles. The BBC reported that a tsunami warning was issued, but Indonesia then called it off, according to Reuters..

The epicenter was 262 miles away from Banda Aceh, Indonesia, which was devastated by the December 2004 tsunami.
