China’s underwhelming “Jasmine Revolution” on Sunday, in which a few hundred quiet protesters in Beijing and Shanghai were quickly shuffled away by police, may have been just the start of an ongoing string of demonstrations, the mystery organizers claim.
The anonymous Internet users who first called for the demonstrations last week posted a new letter (in Chinese) on the web Wednesday, calling for continued, non-violent protests every Sunday across China in designated locations in 13 cities. The New York-based group Human Rights in China translated a copy of the letter, which calls for an end to rampant corruption and says, in part:
“We do not support violent revolution; we continue to support non-violent non-cooperation. We invite every participant to stroll, watch, or even just pretend to pass by. As long as you are present, the authoritarian government will be shaking with fear.”
