Full Frame: Women warriors

Full Frame features photo essays and conversations with photographers.

“Women Warriors: Vietnam” seeks to tell the stories of the women who have served in Vietnam’s 20th-century wars, to examine how their lives were changed by combat, and how being a woman has influenced the way they coped with conflict. These women joined the army at a very young age.

These six histories form the first part of what I hope will become a larger series titled, “Women Warriors,” which examines the role that women have played in recent conflicts. In learning the stories of these women, and understanding how conflict has shaped these women as mothers, daughters, sisters and wives, this project endeavors to document the ways in which conflict affects the next generation.

About the photographer:

Elizabeth Herman recently graduated from Tufts University with a B.A. in political science and economics. She is a Fulbright fellow in Bangladesh, where she will be researching political influences on the development of national history curricula.
