Brazilian universities not keeping up with economy

Brazil now has the seventh-largest economy in the world, but its universities aren’t keeping up, according to two recent surveys by the Times Higher Education. The newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo laments that Brazil is the only BRIC not to have at least one university listed in rankings by reputation – schools sorted by what academics think of them. China has several; India and Russia each have one. But when you look at the Times Higher Education ranking by quality—or at least their assessment of it—China is the only one of the four emerging economies with universities in the top two hundred. And Brazil’s universities aren’t great, but they’re no worse than its neighbors: no country in South America has a university in the top 200.
