MILAN — American designer Tommy Hilfiger brought a taste of his all-American prep styles to Milan’s Piazza Duomo by opening an anachronistic the pop-up Cape Cod cottage in central Milan for the Fashion Week Menswear Spring/Summer 2012.
The American designer set up a mock beach house with gray cedar shingles and blue and white-striped awnings in the historic plaza to showcase his latest designs. This pop-up display is part of a tour, called Prep World, which has already made stops in New York and Los Angeles.
“The preppy lifestyle has gone global,” Hilfiger told the New York Times. “We feel that our business has grown so well because preppy travels so well. It’s all-American classic.”
The house will continue its tour to other fashion capitals such as Knokke, Belgium, Madrid, Spain and Tokyo, Japan, among others. Hilfiger came up with the idea for a Prep World global tour because he believes the preppy style has become an international trend.
"It's no longer just American," he told Fashion Etc. "It's in Japan and Germany and France and Holland. And it's slightly different from place to place. In Japan it's very, very funky. They have people walking down the streets with argyle socks and tartan sweaters. Mixing patterns."
