Bali bombing suspect Umar Patek extradited to Indonesia after arrest in Pakistan

An Indonesian  militant who allegedly made the bombs that killed more than 200 people, mostly Western tourists, in Bali nine years ago was extradited from Pakistan on Thursday after his arrest there in January.

Umar Patek was the most-wanted Southeast Asian fugitive and had a $1 million bounty on his hear when he was arrested on January 25 in Abbottabad, weeks before U.S. commandos killed Osama bin Laden there.

Intelligence officials hope his arrest will shed light on Al Qaeda's links to affiliates in Southeast Asia, AP reported.

Indonesian security sources say Patek, 41, has confessed to playing a coordinating role in the 2002 Bali bombings, one of the worst terror attacks anywhere in the world since 9/11.

The bombings were the work of Al Qaeda-linked regional terror group Jemaah Islamiyah.

Patek has yet to be charged with any crime but Indonesian counter-terrorism chief Ansyaad Mbai told AFP news agency he would likely stand trial over the Bali attacks and church bombings that killed 19 people in Indonesia in 2000.

Indonesia Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro has said there is information suggesting Patek, who has been on the run since 2002, was in Abbottabad to seek a meeting with bin Laden, according to The Australian newspaper.
