US drone strikes in Pakistan kill ‘at least 8’ suspected Taliban militants
US drone attacks killed at least eight Taliban fighters in northern Pakistan today.
Two important Taliban commanders, including the head of a training unit for suicide bombers, may be among the dead, the Associated Press reported, citing unnamed officials.
Various reports put the death at between eight and 18 militants.
NBC News reported 18 suspected militants were killed in three separate drone attacks in South Waziristan tribal region near the Afghan border.
The BBC, however, put the death toll at “at least eight.”
According to the Associated Press, today’s suspected drone attack was the third in five days. On Wednesday night, top Pakistani militant commander Maulvi Nazir was killed in a drone strike. That was followed by another attack on Thursday.
Drone attacks are a major point of contention between the United States and Pakistan, Reuters reported. Many Pakistanis argue the strikes infringe the country’s sovereignty and kill civilians as well as militants.
