The National Association of Theatre Owners is reviewing all security procedures in the wake of the midnight massacre in Colorado, Reuters reported.
The groups said in a statement on Friday that its members are now "working closely with local law enforcement agencies and reviewing security procedures."
"On behalf of all the members and staff of the National Association of Theatre Owners, our hearts and prayers go out to the victims of this despicable act and their families. We are grateful for the quick and effective response by police and emergency personnel," the group said.
According to Fox News, law enforcement officials in New York City said Friday they are also upping security at movie theaters in response to the shootings. NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said officers will be at theaters throughout the five boroughs where “The Dark Knight Rises” is playing as a precaution against copycat crimes.
A gunman in a gas mask and bullet-proof vest, who has been identified by authorities as James Holmes, allegedly killed 12 people at a midnight premiere of the new Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" on Friday in Aurora, Colorado, after hurling a gas canister into the theater and opening fire on moviegoers.
