Kauhajoki, Finland, Sept. 23, 2008: This screen grab shows Matti Juhani Saari pointing a gun at a camera during a video he filmed of himself and then posted on YouTube. Saari went on a rampage with a semi-automatic pistol for an hour and a half at a vocational high school, killing 10 people before shooting himself in the head. During this video, one of five posted on the Internet in the weeks before Saari opened fire on the high school, Saari declares “You will be the next to die,” before firing four times close to the camera.
BOSTON, Mass. — The Connecticut shooting Friday triggers horrific memories of youth killings over the years. The Columbine attack and Virginia Tech massacre — the country’s deadliest school shooting — are among the most appalling examples.
While the United States has gained world infamy for such atrocious acts, it is not alone. Children have become the target of lone gunmen across the globe. Of recent crimes, Anders Behring Breivik's massacre in Norway in July 2011 and the murders at a Jewish school in Toulousse, France in March of this year remain clear in the consciences of those countries — and the world.
