Ray LaHood, US Transportation Secretary, announces resignation

US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today said was stepping down from his post, according to the Associated Press, marking the departure of the only Republican in Obama's first-term Cabinet. 

During his time as Secretary, LaHood addressed pilot fatigue concerns, pressed for greater air and road safety measures, and supported rail and highway projects, said AP.

"I have had a good run," the former Illinois lawmaker said Tuesday. "I'm one of these people who believe that you should go out while they're applauding."

They seem to be. The Washington Post said LaHood's legacy "gave the Peoria native a higher profile than several predecessors in the role." 

The news was quick to spread on Twitter, where Politico said LaHood's announcement had been expected:
