Occupy movement will take on foreclosed homes

What happens after the bank—or in the case of Occupy DC, the police—take away your home?

Easy: you take it back.

According to The Guardian, Occupy Wall Street in New York has been working with local activists to inhabit an empty home. They plan on handing over the home to a homeless family.

USA Today reported that "500 activists marched through the East New York section of Brooklyn" today towards the undisclosed home. A block party is planned to close the march, The Guardian reported, and protesters will then begin renovating the property.

The campaign is called Occupy Our Homes. On its website, it declared today as its National Day of Action:

Actions are taking place in over twenty-five cities around America, as the Occupy movement joins with homeowners and people fighting for a place to live. Our system has been serving Wall Street, big banks, and the one percent. Clearly this has not worked. We are the 99% and we are reclaiming our homes.

The group also plans on disrupting auctions that are selling off foreclosed properties from banks and other mortgage holders, reported USA Today.

Demonstrators from about 20 to 25 other Occupy movements across the country are pulling the same feat.

The LA Times reported that, with the help of the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, Occupy Our Homes is reclaiming "two Southern California residences as a show of resistance against banks."

The owner of one of the homes, located in Riverside, was denied a loan modification. The second home in South Gate, was refinanced in 1990. When the family tried to modify their mortgage payments, the bank stopped accepting payments.
