NEW YORK — Police have formally charged nanny Yoselyn Ortega with murdering two young children in her care.

Nine days after little Lucia Krim, 6, and her brother, Leo, 2, were found stabbed to death in the bathtub of their luxury New York apartment, Ortega was arrested and charged with first and second degee murder, Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne, said.

"No longer intubated and recuperating from what appeared to be wounds she inflicted on herself at the crime scene, Ortega agreed to talk to New York City detectives this afternoon," Browne said in a statement obtained by Reuters.

"After the interview, at 6:06 p.m. today, Ortega was formally arrested and charged with murdering both children."

Ortega has been hospitalised since the alleged murders on October 25 due to self inflicted knife wounds she suffered when the children's mother, Marina Krim, walked in on the horrifying scene at her Upper West side apartment, CNN reported.

New York Daily News reported Ortega, from the Dominican Republic, remains at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center but is “no longer incubated and recuperating”.

The children’s parents, Marina and Kevin, a CNBC executive, have gone into seclusion with their surviving daughter, Nessie.
