Miranshah, Pakistan: Clashes leave at least 8 dead

Pakistani officials say at least eight peole were killed in clashes early today and Sunday in the country's restive North Waziristan tribal district bordering Afghanistan, Agence-France Press (AFP) reported.
Security forces told AFP four militants and one soldier were killed on Sunday in an insurgent-led attack on a security forces check point in the region's main town of Miranshah, with violence carrying into today as the military attacked a suspected militant hideout in the nearby area of Datakhel.

Security personnel told AFP three civilians were killed and over a dozen wounded in today's military assault. The Pakistani military, however, refused to confirm the deaths.
Local Pakistani agencies, meanwhile, also reported continued violence in the area early today, according to Pakistan's The Nation and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Radio Mashaal.
The North Waziristan tribal district is considered a haven for Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked extremists.
