Kansas sperm donor sued for child support (VIDEO)

A Kansas man who donated sperm to a lesbian couple is now being sued for child support.

William Marotta argues he shouldn't have to pay the money, claiming he and the women signed an agreement waiving all of his parental rights, The Associated Press reported.

But no doctors were used for the artificial insemination, which is required by state law.

Because of that, state officials argue Marotta can and should be held responsible for the $6,000 the child's biological mother received through public assistance, according to the AP.

At least 10 other states have similar laws.

"The state does not recognize the contract. We'll see if the courts in Kansas do," Marotta's attorney, Ben Swinnen, told ABC News. "We have filed a motion to dismiss. We hope to prevail, but this is the first round."

Marotta, 46, became involved when he answered a Craiglist ad in 2009 from Topeka couple Angela Bauer and Jennifer Schreiner, who were seeking a sperm donor, UPI reported.

When Schreiner and Bauer broke up, Schreiner applied for state assistance to help care for the girl, which has totaled $6,000 to date.

The case will be heard in court on Jan. 8.
