Bomb kills baby hours after being born in Afghanistan

A roadside bomb killed a mother, her newborn child, and four relatives overnight in Afghanistan's eastern Khost province, local officials said today, according to Agence-France Presse.

“A pregnant woman was taken by her family to a hospital last night at 10 p.m., and they were making their way home in the morning with their newly-born baby when the bomb hit,” provincial governor Zarmaeed Mokhlis told Reuters today.
Relatives told AFP the group has headed home after the baby was delivered in the hospital in the town of Sabari.
AFP attributed the attack to the Taliban, but Reuters said the group declined to clarify whether or not they were involved.
Roadside bombs are frequently used by militants in their fight against Afghan forces and the NATO force there.
Such attacks on civilians add to fears of instability following the planned withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan in 2014.
