Bob Dole has been hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital

Former GOP senator and 1996 Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole has been hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital, according to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Reid told the Senate Tuesday evening that Dole "is infirm, he is sick" and that the 89-year-old called him a few days ago to explain he is at Walter Reed but "not for a checkup," ABC News reported.

Sen. John McCain confirmed that Dole had sent an email to him and other senators from the hospital asking them to support the Convention of Persons with Disabilities legislation.

Dole sustained an arm injury in World War II, CBS News reported.

Dole's assistant said in an email to CBS News "he checked himself in for a routine procedure and will discharge tomorrow."
