Australian PM Julia Gillard visits wildfire-hit Tasmania (VIDEO)
More than 100 buildings were destroyed in the wildfires that swept through southern Tasmania.
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Monday visited the island state of Tasmania where wildfires have destroyed more than 100 buildings over the past four days.
Gillard promised assistance would be provided to those in need, the BBC reported.
Several blazes continue to burn out of control and firefighters are bracing themselves for extremely hot conditions to return tomorrow.
Fires flared on Thursday amid a record summer heat wave that has pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), Voice of America reported.
Police plan to charge a 31-year-old man for starting a 10,000-hectare (24,700-acre) wildfire by leaving his campfire unattended, SBS reported.
So far no deaths have been reported, but dozens of people remain unaccounted for and police have warned they could find bodies as they search burned-out cars and houses.
