AP summer intern Armando Montano found dead in Mexico City

A 22-year-old summer intern for The Associated Press was found dead in the elevator shaft of an apartment building in Mexico City.

The body of Colorado Springs, Colo., resident Armando Montano was discovered early Saturday, the AP reported.

He had been living in the apartment building in the capital city's Condesa neighborhood, and authorities were investigating the cirumstances of his death.

Montano was not on assignment at the time of his death, according to the AP.

He arrived in Mexico City in early June after graduating from Grinnell College with a bachelor's degree in Spanish and a concentration in Latin American studies, Denver TV station KMGH reported.

Montano had planned to pursue a master's degree in journalism from the University of Barcelona this fall, the AP reported.

He also covered the Iowa presidential caucuses as an intern for The New York Times, and spent time with The Chronicle of Higher Education in Washington, D.C.; The Colorado Indepedent online news service; and The Seattle Times, according to the AP.

"Armando was a smart, joyful, hardworking and talented young man," said Marjorie Miller, AP's Latin America editor. "He absolutely loved journalism and was soaking up everything he could."
