Angelina Jolie named Sarajevo citizen
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt visit refugees in the village of Medjedja, near the eastern Bosnian town of Visegrad, 70 kilometers (43 miles) east of Sarajevo on April 5, 2010 on a surprise visit to meet refugees still suffering from the brutal 1992-1995 civil war.
Angelina Jolie is now a citizen of Sarajevo.
The Bosnian capital named the actress an honorary citizen for directing "In the Land of Blood and Honey" about the 1992-95 Bosnian war, the Associated Press reported.
She is being honored for 'keeping the truth about wartime events in Sarajevo and Bosnia-Hercegovina alive,'" according to the official statement, wrote Agence France Presse.
Spokeswoman for the Sarajevo Canton, Lamija Bojadzic, told the AP it wasn't clear if Jolie would attend the May 3 ceremony in Sarajevo.
The controversial movie was plagued by problems and bad publicity before it was released.
CBS reported Jolie was denied permission to film in Bosnia until the government approved her script and many locals were angry the movie focused on the relationship between a Serb man who rapes a Bosnian woman.
On the eve of the film premiere, the head of a group of Serbs held prisoner during Bosnia's 1992-1995 war called for the movie to be banned in the Serb-run part of the country.
