Ali Motaheri, Iranian lawmaker, says Ahmadinejad should open a nightclub

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could open a nightclub given his liberal views on women’s dress, a critical lawmaker has mockingly informed the Iranian leader, Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported, according to CNN.

Conservative parliamentarian Ali Motaheri, a longtime opponent of Ahmadinejad, told lawmakers that the president’s views “actually allowed sexual provocation” so he and his supporters “should think of opening nightclubs and cabarets,” reported Agence-France Press.

In the past Ahmadinejad has criticized the country’s morality police – a unit responsible for making sure Iranian women are dressed according to Islamic principles – for being overly severe, said CNN.

But the president has not significantly distanced himself from the strict public measures enforced on women in Iran.

Motaheri’s comments come amid a fresh crackdown on female appearance tied to concerns over the coming hot summer months in Iran, according to the Indian Express.

Young Iranian women have been pushing the boundaries on dress and behavior in recent years.
