Afghanistan: Roadside bombing kills 10 policemen

Ten policemen were killed after a roadside bomb hit their patrol vehicle in central Afghanistan.

The bomb hit their pickup truck in the Chak district of Maidan Wardak province on Friday, reported BBC News.

"Yesterday afternoon a local police vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb that unfortunately left all ten local police dead," said Ministry of the Interior spokesman Sediq Sediqqi to Agence France-Presse.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, but said the death toll was seven.

"The roadside bomb was planted by our mujahideen in Chak district of Wardak yesterday," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told AFP.

According to the Associated Press, the Afghan Local Police are a government-sponsored militia force that works alongside the Afghan army and the national police.

GlobalPost reported on another Taliban attack in Afghanistan earlier today. Two gunmen hid pistols in their shoes and managed to make it to the reception room for Kandahar state governor Tooryalai Wesa's office before a guard noticed something suspicious. A gunfight ensued, killing the two militants and two government guards.

Weesa and some of his constituents escaped out a back door to the press office when they heard the gunfire, and waited out the rest of the 30-minute attack, according to the AP.

"The insurgents are not stupid. They had hidden very small guns in their shoes and at two checkpoints they didn't catch them," Wesa told the AP.
