2012 Pulitzer Prize winners in journalism and arts announced

This year's Pulitzer Prize winners in journalism and arts have been announced.
Among the prize holders for journalism are the Associated Press, The New York Times, first-time winner The Huffington Post and 24-year-old Patriot-News reporter Sara Ganim, reported the AP.

According to CNN, Ganim and other members of The Patriot-News staff in Harrisburg, Penn., won the Pulitzer Prize for local reporting for their coverage of the Penn State sex abuse scandal. Ganim is credited with breaking the story and is a 2008 graduate of Penn State. She is one of the youngest journalists to win a Pulitzer Prize.
"It's unusual for someone that young to win," Pulitzer Prize administrator Sig Gissler said to CNN, but "heartening to see that we've got some young journalists that are coming up that are doing terrific work."
Also of note this year: the absence of prizes given in two categories. According to The New York Times, the administers of the awards — the Pulitzer Prize Board at Columbia University in New York — didn't name winners in the editorial writing and fiction categories. The fiction prize is highly coveted, and the last time the category had no winner was in 1977.
Other winners this year include Massoud Hossaini of Agence France-Presse for breaking news photography, Craig F. Walker of The Denver Post for feature photography, "Silent Night: Opera in Two Acts," by Kevin Puts for music, and "Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention," by the late Manning Marable for history.
