Two Kenyan police officers were shot dead and their rifles were stolen on Sunday in the northern town of Garissa near the border with Somalia.

The killings came just hours after a nine-year-old boy was killed in Nairobi by a grenade attack on a church, reported Reuters. Officials suspect the attack was carried out by sympathizers of Somali al Shabaab rebels. The shooting also followed a Kenyan troop-led offensive against insurgents in their last stronghold in Somalia.

According to Al Jazeera, Kenya has been hit by various grenade attacks since it sent troops to Somalia to fight an al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab rebel group blamed for raids in the country and kidnappings of Western tourists.

GlobalPost previously reported on the grenade attack on a church's Sunday school in Nairobi that killed the nine-year-old boy and seriously hurt up to six others.
