A Southwest Airlines flight had problems landing at LaGuardia airport in New York on Monday when the plane's nose wheel collapsed upon arrival, the Associated Press reported, citing aviation officials.
There were conflicting reports as to the number of people injured aboard Flight 345, a Boeing 737 arriving from Nashville, Tennessee.
Southwest Airlines issued a statement late Monday saying at least eight people had been reported hurt so far, three of them crew members. The statement continued:
"Eyewitness reports indicate the aircraft's nose gear collapsed upon landing. There were 150 people on board including customers and crew. All customers have been deplaned and transferred to the terminal."
Passengers had to exit the plane using emergency chutes, said Reuters. Emergency vehicles were reported at the scene.
Six people were hospitalized with minor injuries, Reuters reported, and another six crew members taken in for observation. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey also said four people had anxiety attacks, according to the AP.
"It was just a bang and a bounce and then just a slam on the brakes and then it was a skidding feeling. You could tell they were trying to stop the plane," passenger Kathy Boles told CNN. "It was very clear as soon as we went down that something was really wrong."
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident, said the AP.
In a news conference Monday evening, a Port Authority official said the Boeing 737's front wheel had collapsed after it landed, causing the plane to skid down the runway on its nose.
The airport was briefly closed but was expected to be open as normal by Tuesday morning, said Tom Bosco, the Port Authority's acting director of aviation, according to the BBC.
