NYPD makes 5 millionth stop and frisk under Bloomberg

The NYPD is set to record its 5 millionth stop-and-frisk under Mayor Michael Bloomberg today, the New York Civil Liberties Union announced. 

The NYCLU is opposed to the stop-and-frisk practice because they say that the it targets a disproportionate amount of minorities, and that it fails to catch violent criminals. In fact, 88 percent of the people stopped were innocent, and 86 percent were black or Latino.  “This disturbing milestone is a slap in the face to New Yorkers who cherish the right to walk down the street without being interrogated or even thrown up against the wall by the police,” NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman announced in a statement.

The announcement comes just after an NYC social worker is suing the NYPD for its stop-and-frisk policy.

Kaylan Pedine, 29, claims she was talking about how much she didn't like the policy when two officers overheard as they walked by. She says they then put her in handcuffs and arrested her on a bogus charge, the New York Post reported. The trial starts next week in Manhattan.
