Ancient Mayan pyramid gutted for Belize road project: Report
The El Castillo (The Castle), a step pyramid at the Chichen Itza archaeological site that was built by the Mayan civilization in the Mexican state of Yucatan, on Dec. 2, 2010.
A 2,300-year-old Mayan pyramid was destroyed by a construction company working on a road project in Belize, reported the Associated Press.
According to the report, only a tiny piece of the pyramid was left after the bulldozers and backhoes started work last week.
Belize Institute of Archeology director Dr. Jaime Awe told AP the destruction of the Nohmul pyramid and temple area was a disgrace.
The ruins were reportedly on private land but ancient Mayan buildings have state protection.
