Allan Arbus, who played psychiatrist Maj. Sidney Freedman on “M*A*S*H” dies ages 95 (VIDEO)

Allan Arbus dying, who played psychiatrist Major Sidney Freedman on "M*A*S*H." has died aged 95.

He died at his home in Los Angeles, his daughter Amy — a New York-based photographer — confirmed to The New York Times.

His second wife, Mariclare Costello Arbus, said he "just got weaker and weaker and was at home with his daughter and me" when he passed away.

The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) credits Arbus with a dozen episodes of M*A*S*H, as well as a long list of television feature roles starting in 1969.

According to the Times, Arbus was a "was a TV regular during the 1970s and '80s," appearing on "Taxi," "Starsky & Hutch," "Matlock" and other shows.

He also appeared in such films as "Coffy" and "Crossroads."

However, his best-known role was the acerbic Maj. Freedman who "treated wounds of the psyche much as Capt. Hawkeye Pierce treated surgery patients: with a never-ending string of zingers." 

 Alan Alda, who played Hawkeye, told the Archive of American Television that Arbus was very believable as a therapist:

"I was so convinced that he was a psychiatrist I used to sit and talk with him between scenes. After a couple months of that I noticed he was giving me these strange looks, like ‘How would I know the answer to that?’ "

Arbus' last acting job was in 2000 in an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm," according to IMDb.com

Before turning to acting in his 40s, Arbus was a successful fashion photographer and married to photographer Diane Arbus.

The couple divorced in 1969 and she committed suicide in 1971.
