School Year Blog: What do South African kids think it’s like in America?

This story is part of a year-long series, School Year: Learning, Poverty, and Success in a South African Township.

All this year, I’ve been reporting on a public high school near Cape Town, South Africa. It’s called the Centre of Science and Technology (COSAT), and it serves families in the low-income township of Khayelitsha.

My goal has been to give people a sense of what it’s like to be a high school student in this part of the world. But I’ve often found myself wondering: what do students here think it’s like in my part of the world — in America?

So, I finally decided to ask them. This is what they said:
