Patti LuPone plays Mama Rose in “Gypsy”

Studio 360

The musical tells the story of legendary vaudeville performer Gypsy Rose Lee and her overbearing stagemother, Rose.  The musical is packed with show-stopping numbers, huge emotional highs and lows.  The role of Mama Rose is something like the King Lear of American musical theater.  And people who have seen all of the calssic productions of "Gypsy" say that it has never been done better.

PRI's Peabody Award-winning "Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen" from WNYC is public radio's smart and surprising guide to what's happening in pop culture and the arts.
