Fenway Park’s Troubled Racial Past

The Takeaway

Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox’s storied ballpark, celebrated its 100th birthday late last month. And in honor of the centennial, moments in Red Sox history were remembered and relived, like the “Curse of the Bambino,” the 86-year World Series drought, and the reversal of the Curse in 2004.
Today we’re talking about one element of Fenway’s history that is rarely spoken of: its troubled racial past. Phillip Martin, reporter for our partner WGBH, has been looking into this history and joins us. WGBH Radio will air Fenway stories on Fridays throughout the baseball season. Listen for accounts of history, innovation, behind-the-scenes and how the arts were influenced by America’s oldest ballpark.
