Coping with Tragedy in Yarnell, Arizona

The Takeaway

As fires rage on, residents of the town of Yarnell, Arizona are waiting for the green light to head home and assess the damage. But the community is also mourning the loss of 19 hotshot firemen–an elite firefighting group–who lost their lives last weekend while battling the intense wildfire.
With this tragedy still fresh, many are wondering what they can do to help Yarnell and the surrounding communities.
Today, we’re joined by  Matt Moomaw, a former hotshot from Colorado who now works as a therapist and is in the Yarnell community to offer support. Also on the program is Liz Kinney, Associate of the Wildland Firefighter Foundation. As the process of healing a community begins, Kinney and Moomaw examine the job of the hotshots and the next steps for Yarnell.
