Yesterday, the United States Postal Service released a list of 3,653 post offices it will be reviewing and could potentially close because of low activity and workload. Most of these threatened branches are in rural areas of the United States. Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe has proposed outsourcing many of the basic services a post office offers, like selling stamps and shipping, to local businesses.
Without federal support, local stations, especially in rural and underserved areas, face deep cuts or even closure.
