Aid for Spaniards from COVID era turns into debt

Five years after the COVID-19 pandemic began, hundreds of thousands of Spain’s poorest families who received monthly government assistance are now being told they were overpaid and must return the money. The trouble is, the recipients were already low-income earners and most say they don’t have any savings, much less cash on hand, to pay back the COVID aid based on errors the government admits it made.
