Thousands displaced in Colombia as guerrilla violence intensifies

The World

Thousands of people have fled their homes in northeastern Colombia, and at least 80 have been killed, as two rebel groups fight for control of the Catatumbo, a region next to the border with Venezuela that is teeming with cocoa fields. The fighting has displaced 18,000 people over the past few days. It led President Gustavo Petro to suspend peace talks with the ELN, Colombia’s largest rebel group, and declare a “state of emergency” this week. Manuel Rueda reports from the border town of Cucuta, where many have fled.
