Belgium must pay restitution for forced adoptions in its former African colonies

Belgium must pay restitution to five women who were forcibly taken from their mothers in the 1950s and placed in orphanages run by the Catholic Church. Like thousands of other children in Belgium’s African colonies, such as the Belgian Congo, they were mixed race with a European father and an African mother, taken from their homes at a time when mixed-race children suffered heavy discrimination.
