A rusting oil tanker, the FSO Safer, anchored about five miles off the coast of Yemen, is in danger of spilling its million barrels of oil and contaminating the Red Sea coasts of Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti and Eritrea. UN efforts to prevent the spill have been stymied by the ongoing Yemen war. Now, the human cost of such a spill has been calculated. Host Marco Werman speaks with Ben Huynh, a Stanford University researcher who has developed a computer model to show how tens of millions of people’s lives would be affected if the Safer is allowed to break up or explode.
