Explosions this week in Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria, bordering Ukraine, are raising further questions about Russian plans in the region. It’s not clear who was behind the explosions. But a Russian military commander said last week that the Kremlin plans to set up a corridor through southern Ukraine, connecting it to the separatist region of Transnistria, where about 1,500 Russian troops are stationed. “We are a fragile country in a fragile region,” Maia Sandu, Moldova’s president, said.
