Kashmir is a visually dramatic region bisected by the Himalayas. Both India and Pakistan claim it and it has been in near-constant political turmoil for more than 75 years. Recently, there have been targeted killings in Kashmir that appear to be a response to India’s direct rule of Kashmir. In 2019, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi scrapped the region’s special status and Indian security forces have been a heavy presence in Kashmir ever since. Marco Werman speaks with author and journalist Gowhar Geelani who is in Srinagar, the largest city in Kashmir.
