Venezuela and Guyana have been ramping up nationalist propaganda campaigns as a border dispute over a remote region that is rich in oil and gold intensifies. The push to take over the region of Essequibo began with a referendum in early December in which voters were asked if this territory should be turned into a Venezuelan state.
